Loxia scotica (Scottish Crossbill)

Scientific name: Loxia scotica Hartert, 1904

Bird group: Finches and Crossbills

Field characters. 17 cm. Very similar to Parrot Crossbill and almost indistinguishable. Male red, with black wings and tail, female similar but green instead of red. Bill only slightly less deep, intermediate in size and shape between Common Crossbill and Parrot Crossbill. Distribution is best way of recognition.

Voice. Similar to Parrot Crossbill.

Distribution. Locally common resident in Scotland.

Habitat. Confined to pine forests.

Food. Pine seeds, which are consumed in same way as Parrot Crossbill.
