Corvus cornix (Hooded Crow)

Scientific name: Corvus cornix Linnaeus 1758

Bird group: Crows

Field characters. 46 cm. Apart from silver-grey hindneck, mantle, and underparts, identical to Carrion Crow in behaviour, morphology and choice of food and habitat. Where co-existing during breeding season, will interbreed freely with Carrion Crow. During winter slightly more gregarious than Carrion Crow.

Voice. Similar to that of Carrion Crow.

Distribution. Common. Replaces Carrion Crow in northern and eastern part of Europe, Ireland and Scotland. Northern populations migrate south- to south-westward, into breeding range of black subspecies.

Habitat. Similar to that of Carrion Crow; during winter more often near coast than Carrion Crow.

Food. Similar to that of Carrion Crow.
