Sitta whiteheadi (Corsican Nuthatch)

Scientific name: Sitta whiteheadi Sharpe, 1884

Bird group: Nuthatches

Field characters. 12 cm. Occurs only on Corsica and is the only Nuthatch found there. Like a small Eurasian Nuthatch, but head with black cap, black eye-stripe and white supercilium. Upperparts slate blue, underparts off-white. Female with blue crown and eye-stripe.

Voice. Clear and varied. A jay-like call, a soft 'poui', 'pupupupupu', tsi-tsi-tsi', etc.

Distribution. Common resident.

Habitat. Occurs in mountain woods, especially in pine trees.

Food. Invertebrates and pine seeds.
