Parus cristatus (Crested Tit)

Scientific name: Parus cristatus Linnaeus 1758

Bird group: Tits and allies

Field characters. 11.5 cm. The only tit with a crest. Crest spotted black and white, face greyish white with black line behind eye, throat black with black line extending into neck. Upperparts brown, underparts white with orange-buff flanks. Less in flocks than other tits.

Voice. Goldcrest-like 'siesie' and a very characteristic 'turrrr'.

Distribution. Common resident. With Siberian Tit and Sombre Tit the least migratory tit.

Habitat. Mainly found in coniferous forest, sometimes in mixed forest.

Food. Chiefly insects, but also takes pine seeds and berries. Sometimes climbs tree like Eurasian Treecreeper, otherwise feeds on branches.
