Scientific name: Hippolais olivetorum (Strickland, 1837)

Field characters. 15 cm. Largest Hippolais species. Fairly uniformly coloured with long and pointed wings. Bill long and heavy, dark with yellowish base, legs bluish. Upperparts brownish-grey, underparts greyish-white. Pale supercilium and dark eye. Crown with high peak behind eye. Wings and tail darker and tail with white feather margins on outer pair. Clear pale wing panel, as Icterine Warbler. Shy, usually hiding in dense foliage.

Voice. Calls 'chuck', 'check'. Song warbling but slow, with harsh notes resembling Great Reed Warbler.

Distribution. Rare, but locally common summer visitor in south-east Europe.

Habitat. Open deciduous woods with patches of dense cover, orchards, gardens, and olive-groves.

Food. Insects and fruits.
