Oenanthe leucura (Black Wheatear)

Scientific name: Oenanthe leucura (J. F. Gmelin, 1789)

Bird group: Thrushes and allies

Field characters. 18 cm. Largest wheatear in region and the only one which is largely black. Male sooty black, except for white undertail coverts and white on rump and tail. Edges of flight feathers slightly browner. Female same, but at close range separable by browner colours.

Voice. Call 'pee-pee-pee'. Short mellow warble, with some fluting and scratching notes.

Distribution. Locally common resident in south-west of region.

Habitat. Dry and open plains or slopes, with rock-walls and boulders nearby.

Food. Mainly invertebrates, which are caught as in other wheatears. Sometimes takes berries.
