Scientific name: Calandrella rufescens (Vieillot, 1820)
Bird group: Larks
Field characters. 14 cm. Often difficult to distinguish from Short-toed Lark, because plumage can be variable in both species. Greyer, with whole chest streaked, never with black spots on sides of breast. Head gives rounder impression, supercilium is greyer and inconspicuous, and bill is shorter but sometimes thicker than Short-toed Lark. Primaries project beyond tertials, unlike the latter. Rarely found on arable fields and not often found in mixed flocks.
Voice. Call dry 'prrt'. Song, given in flight, variable, even imitates other larks, but own call often admixed in song.
Distribution. Within region only found in southern Spain, where common in suitable habitat.
Habitat. Inhabits dry coastal plains, saltmarshes, and salines
Food. Invertebrates and seeds. Feeds on the ground.
