Scientific name: Melanocorypha leucoptera (Pallas, 1811)

Field characters. 18 cm. Size of Calandra Lark. Male with rusty-red crown and wing-coverts and white underparts; chest and flanks streaked. Wing pattern black and rusty-red with a conspicuous white trailing edge. Colours in female subdued; heavily streaked.

Voice. Call a clear "wed". Song like Common Skylark, but simpler and louder.

Distribution. Common within restricted range.

Habitat. Steppes with rather open and low vegetation.

Food. In summer insects and seeds; in winter seeds.
