Strix uralensis (Ural Owl)

Scientific name: Strix uralensis Pallas, 1771

Field characters. 60 cm. Looks like a large, long tailed, pale Tawny Owl. Plumage greyish sandy brown with dark streaks and white spots. Facial disc uniform, eyes dark. In flight rounded wings and tail with obvious dark bands, especially so on underwings. No ear tufts.

Voice. Song low and far carrying 'whoo whoo-oo-ooo. Also barking 'wauw'.

Distribution. Scarce resident, locally more common.

Habitat. Pine and deciduous forest. Hunts in woods and open field.

Food. Small and medium sized mammals and birds.
