Scientific name: Alectoris barbara (Bonnaterre, 1791)

Field characters. 33 cm. At distance paler and more pink than Red-legged Partridge; at short distance easily distinguished by broad chestnut collar speckled with white and by blue-grey throat, lores, and cheeks. Pink-chestnut stripe behind eye. Bright red orbital ring; legs and bill red. Upperparts grey-brown with vinaceous wash; slate-blue scapulars edged rufous. Flanks pale slate, striped vertically with black and white; chest pink-grey. Juvenile more uniform and less vinaceous than adult.

Voice. Utters a repeated 'kutchuck kutchuk' and a rapid 'kakelik'.

Distribution. Resident on Sardinia and introduced on Gibraltar.

Habitat. Occurs in a variety of habitats, ranging from bare stony hills to scrub and woodland. Generally fond of bushy, well-wooded country.

Food. Feeds chiefly on young leaves, shoots, seeds, and fruits.
