Puffinus yelkouan (Yelkouan Shearwater)

Scientific name: Puffinus yelkouan (Acerbi, 1827)

Bird group: Shearwaters and Petrels

Field characters. Length 30-35 cm; wingspan 76-82 cm. Together with Balearic Shearwater formerly considered a race of Manx Shearwater; both species have relatively shorter tails and longer bills. Size similar to Manx Shearwater but upperparts are brown instead of black; proportions similar to Balearic. Compared to Manx Shearwater, under tail-coverts are dusky instead of white; dark axillaries; white crescent behind ear less prominent or absent.

Voice. Similar to Balearic Shearwater.

Distribution. S, C and E Mediterranean.

Habitat. Comparable to Manx Shearwater.

Food. Comparable to Manx Shearwater.

Eggs. Size 58 x 41 mm (50-65 x 37-44), weight 50 g.
