Phylloscopus inornatus (Yellow-browed Warbler)

Scientific name: Phylloscopus inornatus (Blyth, 1842)

Field characters. 10 cm. Very small, size of Goldcrest. Upperparts green, underparts white or greyish-white. Broad and distinct yellow supercilium, bordered by dark eye-stripe and dark stripe above. Two yellow wing-bars, yellow edges on flight feathers and yellowish-white tips on tertials. Legs pale pink to brown. Rump sometimes with some yellow; sometimes an indistinct crown stripe. Restless, moves swiftly and agile through vegetation, often fly-catching and hovering.

Voice. Call like Coal Tit, 'tsweesp'. Song rarely heard within region.

Distribution. Breeds in Siberia. Only occurs in region in varying numbers on autumn migration. In some years quite common, but inconspicuous.

Habitat. Dense taiga on breeding grounds; all types of forest or scrub on autumn migration.

Food. Insects, often caught by hovering, by snapping from leaves or by sallies from perch.
