Scientific name: Phoenicurus ochruros (S. G. Gmelin, 1774)

Field characters. 14.5 cm. Male mainly black on head, upperparts and underparts, with white wing patch, white undertail coverts and red rump and tail, though central tail feathers darker. Female slate-grey where male is black with small pale eye-ring. Juvenile like female. Trills with tail like Common Redstart. Flight weak and fluttery.
Voice. Call 'tsip', 'tec', 'wheet'. Song short and reminiscent to Redstart, but very characteristic is the harsh scratching introduction.
Distribution. Locally common. Summer visitor in north part of region, resident in south.
Habitat. Rocky slopes and cliffs, both in mountains and along coast. Avoids trees and woodlands. Also found in city-centres, on churches, industrial terrains, railway stations, etc.
Food. Invertebrates and fruits. Looks for prey from perch or hops and runs around, like Northern Wheatear. Also catches flying insects, like flycatcher.
