A non-breeding or supplementary plumage (stage) which is cryptic, worn for a comparatively short period (compared to 'real' non-breeding plumage) and replaces a colourful breeding plumage. Notably encountered in some Anatidae species, of which the males have a dull plumage during the latter part of summer (often together with a moult of the remiges), after having had a full breeding plumage for the greater part of the year.
