Any contour feather that overlies (dorsally or ventrally) the bases of the tail- (rectrices) or flight-feathers (remiges); also called 'tectrix'. Applied also to the auriculars or ear coverts, concealing the external ear opening. See also: wingcoverts and tailfeathers.
