Sometimes used in general to indicate a large assemblage of organisms in a particular area, with one or two dominant species. In bird context mostly used for a characteristic grouping between two or more different species (bird but also other) that usually occur together. A well-known example is the association of the African Oxpecker with several large mammals for feeding.
