Defined as the area south of the Antarctic Confluence, roughly along 50° S latitude. This line is distinguished by a sudden change in surface temperatures and forms an important physical and faunistic boundary between Antarctic and subantarctic zones. The Antarctic comprises the continent of Antarctica and off lying islands, extensive sea-ice cover and ocean. Important birds of the Antarctic are: penguins, living on the coastal slopes and sea-ice; smaller albatrosses and shags occur on cliff ledges; large albatrosses are found on higher and flatter grounds; and smaller petrels. Every available niche seems to be taken.
